Imagine an intimate setting where fascinating people come together to share the pleasure of ideas that grasp the mind and won't let go.
An Adventuresome Minds event is not a lecture hall or classroom where a sage on a stage conveys wisdom to the masses. You can find that any day of any week. Instead, an Adventuresome Minds event is more like a jam session where fascinating, engaging people get together, start with a mind-bending idea, and then see where it takes them. That session is lead by an internationally known astrophysicist who Hugh Downs described as, "one of the best explainers in our midst." Sound fun? It is! Until recently intelligent, engaging people often gathered to share both community and the pleasures and challenges of a life of the mind. Much was lost when these salons, once a centerpiece of society, fell victim to the bustle and distractions of an ever more demanding pace of life. You are invited to join us as we add a new twist to this grand, entertaining, and thought-provoking cultural tradition. Your Guide
Jeff Hester is internationally known for his work on topics such as star formation, supernova explosions, pulsars, and the origins of the Solar System. He was a member of the science teams responsible for three of the instruments that have flown on the Hubble Space Telescope, and is responsible for some of the most spectacular images taken with Hubble. Dr. Hester is Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University.
"To my mind, Jeff is one of the best 'explainers' in our midst today... in a class with Carl Sagan and Martin Rees. Students and other audiences he interacts with find their time spent has been more than worthwhile." -- Hugh Downs, Broadcaster Thanks to all for a spectacular opening event!
We held our premier event, "From the Big Bang to Big Brains," at Studio Vino Tuesday, March 13. (See the picture gallery on our blog.) Thanks to all who attended for making it a great success! It was a sold-out event with a great group of people and conversation that ran the gamut from what it means for space to expand to the philosophical implications of living in a multiverse so vast that everything that might exist very possibly does exist.
By the way, every program is its own unique event, following where the conversation leads. Unlike college there are no prerequisites, and every time around the discussion is different. I hope to see you all again in April! "Dr. Hester is loved and respected for his ability to communicate his message effectively and understandably to a lay audience... Professor Hester is one of the best." -- Gena Bonsall, Director, ASU Presidential Advancement | Register Today for Events in AprilNOTE: The Event on Tuesday, April 17 is not by invitation only. Please use the form below to contact us about future events. "From the Big Bang to Big Brains" From the birth of the Universe itself, to the formation of stars, planets, and galaxies, to the rise of life, spend an evening looking at the central theme underlying all of modern science: the origin of structure in an every-changing Universe. "After All, It's Only a Theory" How many times have you heard someone utter that phrase? It's the tried and true catch phrase when someone is trying to convince you that those pesky scientists don't really know anything about evolution, or the age of the Universe, or global warming. But when you hear someone say, "after all, it's only a theory," you can bet they are trying to sell you some swamp land in Florida. A well-corroborated theory is the pinnacle of human knowledge. Join us for a look at the question behind all other questions: "What does it mean to say I know?" Join us for "After All, It's Only a Theory"

Banner Image: The Crab Nebula is the remnant of the great supernova of 1054AD. The supernova, the explosion of a massive star 7000 light years away, was so bright that it was visible during the day for weeks. Today we see the expanding cloud of dust and gas from the supernova seeding the cosmos with the chemical elements of which life is made. All banner images feature Dr. Hester's work.
